Matt "The Terror" Serra is an American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and mixed martial artist. Serra began studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Renzo Gracie and, on May 23, 2000, was awarded his black belt, the first American to do so under Gracie. Serra won the Ultimate Fighter 4 Welterweight Tournament Championship and then defeated Georges "Rush" St. Pierre on April 7, 2007 for the UFC Welterweight Championship in what many considered a surprising upset. On April 19, 2008, in a rematch to determine the undisputed welterweight championship, Serra lost to St. Pierre via TKO. Serra also has impressive grappling credentials, including being an ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship Silver Medalist and a Pan-American Championship Gold Medalist. Serra and his brother, Nick, run two Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools.
